Almost every budget template online is missing the lines that decide a Pakistani month. This one is not. Download it free, open it in Excel or Google Sheets, and fill in your own numbers.

Download the expense sheet

The file is a plain CSV, which means Excel, Google Sheets, WPS Office and Numbers all open it without complaining. No macros, no password, no email required.

Download the Guzara monthly expense sheet (CSV)

To use it in Google Sheets: open Sheets, choose File → Import → Upload, pick the file, and select “Replace spreadsheet”. In Excel, just double-click it.

It has three columns for a reasonPlanned, Actual and Difference. A sheet with only one column tells you what you hoped for. The gap between the first two columns is the only part that ever teaches you anything.

What is inside the sheet

It is organised into five blocks, in the order money actually leaves a household:

The lines most Pakistani budget sheets forget

If you would rather build your own sheet, at least add these. They are the reason a budget that looked fine on the first of the month collapses by the twentieth.

LineWhy it breaks budgets
Family supportSent every month, treated as a favour rather than a fixed cost, so it never appears in the plan.
Medical bufferNobody plans a fever. Households without a standing medical line pay for it out of the grocery line.
School extrasVan, books, uniforms, exam and annual charges routinely add 25–40% on top of the tuition figure.
Bottled water or tankerSmall monthly numbers that recur forever. The bill for piped water itself is often only around Rs 521.
Vehicle servicingOil, tyres and servicing are not monthly, so they get left out — then arrive as a Rs 20,000 surprise.
Eid, weddings and giftsGenuinely large, genuinely predictable, almost never budgeted. Divide the year’s total by twelve and carry it monthly.
Annual billsInsurance, token tax, subscriptions billed yearly. Same fix — one twelfth, every month.

The honest problem with spreadsheets

A sheet is a very good record and a very poor plan. It can tell you what you spent last month. It cannot tell you what your grocery bill should be for four people in Lahore, what a fair rent is on your salary, or what happens to the rest of your month if you take a car on installment.

That is the gap Guzara fills. It starts with a realistic month already filled in for your salary, your city and your household, and every change you make shows its consequences immediately — if you raise rent by Rs 15,000, it tells you which lines just got cut and by how much.

Use the sheet to track. Use the planner to decide. They are different jobs — but they need not be two files. Run the planner and the sheet you download at the end is this same spreadsheet with the Planned column already filled in: your rent, your bijli, your grocery basket broken down by category, your school fees. The Actual column arrives empty, exactly as it does here.

Stop guessing. See the actual number.

Answer a few questions about your salary, your city and your household. Guzara builds the whole month for you — and you can drag any line to see what it costs you elsewhere.

Questions people actually ask

Is the expense sheet really free?

Yes — it is a plain CSV file, downloaded directly, with no email, sign-up or payment.

Will it open in Google Sheets?

Yes. In Google Sheets choose File, then Import, then Upload, and select Replace spreadsheet. It also opens directly in Excel, WPS Office and Apple Numbers.

Is it in rupees?

The amounts are plain numbers with no currency symbol, so they add up correctly in any spreadsheet app. The categories are built around Pakistani household costs — bijli, Sui Gas, school van, family support.

Can I add my own categories?

Yes. It is an ordinary spreadsheet — add rows, rename anything, delete what does not apply to you. Just keep the total formula pointing at the right range afterwards.

How often should I update it?

Fill in Planned once at the start of the month, and Actual once at the end. Ten minutes twice a month is enough. Daily tracking is what makes people quit in week two.

Can I get the sheet with my own numbers already filled in?

Yes. Answer the planner’s questions and the sheet you download at the end has the Planned column filled in from your own plan — rent, bijli, the grocery basket by category, school fees — with the Actual column left empty for you.
