What it costs for a couple to live on their own
Two people are not two of one person. Some lines double, most do not, and the ones that surprise couples are almost never the ones they budgeted for.

What actually doubles, and what does not
This is the whole arithmetic of moving in together, and almost every couple gets it wrong in the same direction — they budget as though everything halves, then find out which things did not.
| Line | Moving from one person to two |
|---|---|
| Rent | Barely moves. The same 2-bed costs the same with two people in it — this is the entire financial case for living together. |
| Electricity | Rises, but not double. One AC cooling one room cools it for two; slab pricing means the extra units cost more per unit than the first ones did. |
| Internet, water, society charges | Do not move at all. |
| Grocery | Close to double, and the first line people underestimate. Two adults eat like two adults. |
| Eating out | Doubles, then some — a couple eats out more often than either person did alone. |
| Transport | Doubles if you both commute separately. This is the line worth designing around before you sign a lease. |
| Medical | Doubles, and gets deferred until it cannot be. |
| Family support | Often doubles — two sets of parents. Almost never in the first budget. |
What a couple pays in rent, by city
Guzara's comfortable rent for a two-income household, at a few realistic combined take-homes.
| Combined take-home | Karachi | Lahore | Islamabad | Rawalpindi |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rs 150,000 | Rs 34,000 | Rs 31,500 | Rs 39,500 | Rs 26,000 |
| Rs 200,000 | Rs 39,500 | Rs 36,000 | Rs 45,500 | Rs 30,000 |
| Rs 300,000 | Rs 48,000 | Rs 44,000 | Rs 55,500 | Rs 36,500 |
| Rs 400,000 | Rs 55,500 | Rs 51,000 | Rs 64,000 | Rs 42,000 |
| Rs 600,000 | Rs 67,500 | Rs 62,000 | Rs 78,500 | Rs 51,500 |
Neighbourhood matters more than city at this income. A 2-bed portion runs Rs 18,000 – Rs 180,000 a month across the areas Guzara covers, which is a wider spread than the gap between any two cities on that table.
The combined salary where it works
Working backwards from rent, the way the city pages do:
| A 2-bed portion at | Tight but workable | Comfortable, with savings |
|---|---|---|
| Rs 30,000 | Rs 86,000 | Rs 120,000 |
| Rs 50,000 | Rs 143,000 | Rs 200,000 |
| Rs 80,000 | Rs 229,000 | Rs 320,000 |
| Rs 120,000 | Rs 343,000 | Rs 480,000 |
Two incomes are the point. A couple earning Rs 120,000 each is not in the same position as one person earning Rs 240,000 — the rent line is identical, but the risk is halved, because one of you losing a job is a setback rather than an ending. That is the real argument for moving out as a couple, and it is not a number on any page.
What it costs before month one
The part that catches every couple: the money that leaves before a single monthly bill arrives.
| Up front | Typical |
|---|---|
| Security deposit — two to three months of rent | Rs 60,000 – 300,000 |
| Advance rent | One to two months |
| Agent commission | Half to one month of rent |
| Furnishing the essentials — bed, fridge, fans, kitchen | Rs 150,000 – 450,000 |
Add it up honestly before you decide the monthly number works. The full list, priced, is in what to buy for a new home.

How much salary does a couple need to live independently in Pakistan?
A combined take-home of Rs 143,000 – Rs 200,000 carries a Rs 50,000 2-bed portion, and Rs 86,000 – Rs 120,000 does the same for a cheaper area. The lower figure in each pair is a month that closes with the savings line thin; below it, the month still closes, but it closes by not saving.
Is it cheaper for a couple to live together than separately?
Substantially — rent, internet, water and society charges are paid once instead of twice, and those are the least flexible lines in any month. Grocery and transport are the ones that genuinely double.
What do newly married couples forget to budget for?
Family support to two sets of parents, the medical buffer, and how much more often a couple eats out than either person did alone. All three are predictable and none of them are usually in the first spreadsheet.
Should we both keep commuting separately?
It is usually the largest avoidable line in a two-income household. A 30 km weekday commute by car costs about Rs 23,000 a month all in, against Rs 6,000 by bike — doubled if you both do it. Worth designing around before choosing where to live.
